Visit to NESCOT
Earlier in the year a group of AS Sociology students visited NESCOT, our
local Further Education College, as part of their Unit studies in Education.
It gave them an insight into the vast range of vocational courses available
to students not following the tradi-tional academic A level curriculum.
Students were given a guided tour of a number of departments including
plumbing, horticulture. hairdressing. beauty therapy, media, art and design
and the performing arts.
Particularly impressive was the Leisure and Tourism course which benefitted
from a room dedicated to a simulated aircraft provided by Virgin Airlines.
Students learnt that the college also offered a range of Higher Education
courses such as Foundation degrees and HNC, as well to introducing more
apprenticeship courses a current flagship policy of the government.
Visit to Croydon Crown Court
Last month Year 13 Sociology students spent the afternoon visiting the
Crown Law Courts in East Croydon to gain first hand experience of the
British Legal System in action. This formed part of their A2 studies into
Crime and Deviance. During their visit they had the opportunity to observe
a case involving the possession of a knife in a public place a
very topical issue given the serious outbreak of knife crimes in London
over recent years.
