  THE GERMAN DEPARTMENT

We are pleased that demand for German remains high at Nonsuch despite a national downward trend. The new Head of German has successfully raised the profile of the subject and it is becoming increasingly popular across all the age ranges.

At KS3 there are 2 classes of German in years 7, 8 and 9. All students study in their form groups until they reach year 10, when they make their GCSE options.

All students are given a text book to use throughout the course. KS3 students have recently moved to the new, more up-to-date 'Logo' text book. All students have some use of the language Laboratory and the ICT suite. In addition, all German class rooms are equipped with internet access which allows students to use the Board Works software and other websites in their lessons.

The course covers the study of a variety of topics, taught in a communicative way, designed to enable students to manage day-to-day real-life situations.

Please follow the link to read more about KS3 topics.

At KS4 the most able students are fast-tracked in German allowing them to take GCSE at the end of year 10, followed by AS in year 11. We also have another non Fast-track GCSE class. Students do not take the coursework option at GCSE so they take the final examination in all skills, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.

Please follow the link to KS4 topics.

All students are encouraged to use websites to access games, music and TV in German from home to supplement their learning in the classroom.

We are able to offer students the opportunity to join the Christmas Markets trip Cologne in year 8 and 9. Students in years 10 and 12 are offered a Home Stay Study Tour. For further information about the trips please follow the links.
