The MFL and Classics department comprises ten specialist teachers and
a well resourced teaching area. All classrooms are equipped with digital
projectors with access to the internet and many have an interactive whiteboard.
There is a Language Lab for the sole use of MFL classes.
Students begin studying two languages in year 7, stating a preference
between French, German, Spanish and Latin. They all continue with these
two subjects until the end of year 9 when they choose GCSE options. We
are lucky to enjoy excellent support for the study of Modern Languages
and Classics, and all students are obliged to take at least Modern Language
to GCSE. Students are encouraged to listen to music and watch TV in the
target language to complement their class work.
GCSE, AS and A2 are offered in French, German, Spanish, Latin and Greek.
To satisfy the enthusiasm of our students, we also run additional languages
after school, including Italian GCSE and Mandarin in years 8 and 9. We
have two experienced specialist Mandarin teachers who join us for the
twilight sessions.
There is good demand for additional languages and scope for even more
in the future.
To enrich our students' language learning experience further we offer the
following opportunities:
- Year 8 German Christmas Markets trip
- Year 8 Latin trip to Fishbourne
- Year 9 Classics trip to Rome
- Year 9+10 Classics quiz at Old Palace School, Croydon
- Year 10 Latin trip to Bath
- Year 10+12 Study Tour to Paris
- Year 10+12 Study Tour to Spain, either Seville, Barcelona or Granada
- Years 10 -13 Classics trip to either Rome, Greece or Italy (alternate
years)
