AS/A Level

At Nonsuch students take a GCE Advanced level/AS Mathematics Modular syllabus. The requirement within Mathematics from GCSE is a B grade. Within the A/AS level modules are selected from the following modules:

Core 1 (AS)
Core Mathematics 1 will extend GCSE topics such as quadratics, indices and coordinate geometry. The new topics covered by students are differentiation and integration. This is a non calculator module.

Core 2 (AS)
Core Mathematics 2 will extend students' understanding of trigonometry, algebra and calculus. The new topics covered by students are logarithms, sequences and series

Core 3 (A2)
Core Mathematics 3 extends the core work completed in the AS with further work on algebra, functions, trigonometry, the exponential function, differentiation, integration and numerical methods.

Core 4 (A2)
Core Mathematics 4 extends the core work completed in Core Mathematics 3, notably introducing differential equations. A new topic, vectors, is also included in this module.

Mechanics 1 (AS)
Mechanics 1 is about the application of mathematical models in physical situations to investigate the forces causing an object to move or remain stationary as well as studying the motion of objects that are thrown or dropped. To achieve this, students study force as a vector, kinematics, equilibrium of a particle, Newton's laws of motion and linear momentum.

Statistics 1 (AS)
Students will extend the understanding of ways of displaying and interpreting data such as scatter diagrams and box plots. In this module students will build on this knowledge with a more formal approach to statistics and probability, including work on correlation, regression, discrete random variables and normal distribution.
