Moscow & St Petersburg trip
During February half term forty-one History and Politics
A-level students visited St Petersburg and Moscow.
Our arrival was probably something the students will never forget as it
was like walking into a freezer; the temperature was -18 Celsius. Little
did we realise that in actual fact this would be quite mild. The lowest
temperature during the trip was -23 Celsius! However, the weather did
not deter us from our busy schedule. We spent three days in St. Petersburg
visiting sites such as the Winter Palace, the Hermitage, Kazan Cathedral
and the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood. For many the highlight
was the trip to the Hermitage. The stately rooms and art collections were
breathtaking. Apparently it would take three years to see every painting
- I would give up three years of my life to do this!
After a fabulous time at St Petersburg we took a surprisingly comfortable
overnight train to Moscow. In Moscow we visited sites such as the Kremlin,
Red Square, St Basils and the Moscow Metro. For many students the
trip to the ballet was the best part of the whole trip. We went to the
Bolshoi Theatre to see the world premiere of Reflections. It was a truly
mesmerising performance.
The whole trip gave the students time to acquire information to include
in their historical studies . Furthermore, it enabled students to experience
a very diverse culture and country.
