Nonsuch Old Girls' Association 70th Birthday Party - 3 May 2008

Thank you to everyone who came along to the school to celebrate the 70th birthday on Saturday. The weather was kind, and there was a magnificent attendance - estimated at over 300 - and there was a level of chatter which felt very familiar when everyone was gathered in the Hall.

We were delighted to see 3 headmistresses - Miss Matthews, Mrs Barkey and Mrs Espejo, 11 girls from the first days of the school including Myfanwy Piggott, the first head girl on her first return visit to the School and a significant number of younger girls. Many people had travelled quite a way, including Sheila Thompson (nee Forster) from South Africa, and we hope that everyone found a few familiar faces.

Several people brought along photographs and articles from their time at Nonsuch, some of which have been loaned to the School for the magazine project which is being undertaken. Miss Plastow, who taught at Nonsuch until 1994, had kindly lent us her photographs for the afternoon, and many of us enjoyed looking at those.

Having decided on an informal and open event, the school's catering team kindly opened up the canteen and did a fine trade with tea and delicious home made cakes, for which we thank them. It did make the task of estimating what would be needed for everyone to raise a toast to the School difficult, and we ran out of glasses, although we had plenty of wine!

We had promised the opportunity to make a contribution towards a gift for the School, but in the rush as people started to arrive well before our advertised starting time, we forgot. A number of people did seek out members of the Old Girls committee and make a donation, for which we thank them. If anyone else would like to do so, please send a cheque (payable to NOGA) to the treasurer - Nicola Lenthall. Mrs Espejo has asked for a new clock for the Hall and some more benches which are well used by the girls.

Finally, thank you to Mrs Espejo for her support, the catering and premises teams for their assistance, and to Mrs Shirley, Mrs Forkan, Mr Fishwick, and Mrs Atcheson - all current members of staff - for their help both in the run up to the party and especially on the day.
